Delta Air Lines
Delta Air Lines traces its origins to 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters, a crop-dusting operation in Macon, Georgia, before transitioning into passenger air service in 1929 and eventually growing into one of the largest airlines in the world by passenger volume. The company merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008 in what was then the largest airline merger in history, significantly expanding Delta's international route network, particularly across the Pacific and into Asia, where Northwest had a strong existing presence. Delta has consistently ranked among the most operationally reliable major U.S. airlines in independent industry surveys measuring on-time performance and flight cancellation rates, a reputation the company has actively emphasized in its marketing against domestic competitors. Delta's combination of its unusual origins as a crop-dusting operation and its transformative 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines has made it one of the most significant airlines in American aviation history.
VS
United Airlines
United Airlines traces its origins to 1926 as Varney Air Lines, one of the earliest U.S. airmail carriers, before growing through mergers into United Air Lines, and it became one of the largest airlines in the world across the 20th century. United was involved in one of the most consequential events in aviation security history when United Flight 175 and United Flight 93 were among the four aircraft hijacked in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, with United Flight 93's passengers' actions widely credited with preventing an intended attack on Washington, D.C. United merged with Continental Airlines in 2010, forming what was briefly the largest airline in the world by fleet size, and the combined carrier maintains one of the most extensive international route networks of any U.S. airline, particularly across the Pacific through its Chicago and San Francisco hubs. United Airlines's combination of its deep historical roots in early American airmail service and its extensive modern international route network has made it one of the most significant legacy carriers in aviation history.
