Destiny's Child
Destiny's Child, formed in Houston in the early 1990s, became one of the best-selling girl groups in music history, and their 1999 song "Say My Name" won multiple Grammy Awards, establishing the group as one of the defining R&B and pop acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group underwent significant lineup changes early in their career, including a highly publicized 2000 departure of two original members that drew accusations of mistreatment and generated substantial media attention, before the group settled into its most commercially successful trio lineup featuring Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. Beyoncé's subsequent solo career, becoming one of the most commercially and critically successful artists in popular music history, has retroactively elevated Destiny's Child's historical significance as the group where her career originated, though the group achieved massive commercial success independently of her later solo fame. Destiny's Child's combination of vocal harmony tradition, empowerment-themed lyrical content on songs like "Independent Women" and "Survivor," and Beyoncé's eventual superstar solo trajectory has made the group one of the most commercially and culturally significant girl groups in modern popular music history.
VS
The Supremes
The Supremes, Motown Records' most commercially successful group act of the 1960s, achieved 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, more than any other American vocal group of the decade, and lead singer Diana Ross became one of the most recognizable female pop stars of the era. The group emerged from Detroit's Brewster-Douglass housing projects, and their rise from that background to become one of the most commercially dominant acts on Motown's roster reflected the label's broader mission of developing polished, mainstream-crossover-ready Black musical talent during the civil rights era. Motown founder Berry Gordy's decision to promote Ross to primary lead vocalist and eventually rebrand the group as "Diana Ross and the Supremes" created lasting tension among the group's members, and Ross's eventual 1970 departure for a solo career marked a significant turning point in the group's history. The Supremes' combination of polished vocal harmonies, Motown's meticulous artist development process, and their record-setting number-one single total established them as the definitive girl group of the 1960s, and their commercial success helped demonstrate Black musical artists' viability for genuinely mainstream, cross-racial pop chart dominance during a pivotal era in American civil rights history.
