Dezső Gyarmati
Dezső Gyarmati won three Olympic gold medals in water polo across the 1952, 1956, and 1964 Games, and he was part of Hungary's team during the infamous 1956 "Blood in the Water" match against the Soviet Union, played just weeks after the Soviet invasion crushed the Hungarian Revolution. That politically charged match, in which Hungarian player Ervin Zádor emerged from the pool bleeding heavily after being struck by a Soviet opponent, became one of the most politically significant single sporting events of the Cold War, and Hungary's eventual victory carried enormous symbolic weight for a country whose uprising had just been violently suppressed. Gyarmati's combined five Olympic medals across four Games established him as one of the most decorated water polo players in Olympic history, and his technical scoring ability and tactical leadership made him the central figure of Hungary's mid-20th-century water polo dominance. His family's continued involvement in water polo — his wife was an Olympic swimmer and his daughter later became an Olympic water polo player and coach herself — reflects the sport's deep multi-generational significance within Hungarian sporting culture, where water polo carries a level of national importance comparable to soccer in many other countries.
VS
Maggie Steffens
Maggie Steffens won Olympic gold with the United States women's water polo team at three consecutive Olympics, from 2012 to 2020, and led the team in scoring at multiple Games, establishing herself as the most dominant individual player in the history of American women's water polo. Her performance at the 2012 London Olympics, scoring 21 goals as a teenager to lead the entire tournament in scoring during Team USA's first-ever Olympic gold medal in the sport, immediately established Steffens as one of the most significant young talents in the sport's history. Steffens's continued leadership across three consecutive Olympic gold medal runs, serving as team captain during the later stages of her career, reflected a level of sustained individual and team success that established the United States as the dominant program in women's water polo throughout the 2010s. Her combination of prolific individual scoring and her central leadership role across Team USA's unprecedented three-Olympics gold medal streak has made Steffens the individual most frequently cited as the greatest women's water polo player in the sport's history.
