Dior
Dior launched its fragrance division alongside its founding fashion house in 1947, with "Miss Dior" as its debut scent, and the brand became particularly known for its 1985 release "Poison," an intensely projecting, unapologetically bold fragrance that generated significant public discussion and controversy for its strength. The brand's men's fragrance "Sauvage," launched in 1966 and later relaunched in a significantly reformulated 2015 version, became one of the best-selling men's fragrances in the world, with actor Johnny Depp serving as its long-running brand ambassador and face of its advertising campaigns. Dior's fragrance division has operated under the ownership of LVMH, the French luxury conglomerate, giving it access to significant marketing resources and global retail distribution that helped sustain the brand's position among the top-selling fragrance houses for decades. Dior's combination of its historically bold and discussion-generating scent releases and Sauvage's status as one of the best-selling men's fragrances in the world has made it one of the most commercially significant fragrance brands in the modern luxury industry.
VS
Jo Malone
Jo Malone London was founded by British entrepreneur Jo Malone, who began her career as a facialist before developing her own fragrance blends, opening her first shop in London in 1994 and building the brand's identity around a minimalist, understated approach to scent distinctly different from more traditionally opulent luxury perfume houses. The brand became particularly known for its "fragrance combining" concept, explicitly encouraging customers to layer two different Jo Malone scents together to create a personalized combined fragrance, a marketing approach that positioned the brand's individual scents as deliberately modular components rather than complete standalone products. Estée Lauder Companies acquired Jo Malone London in 1999, and Jo Malone herself later departed the company due to a non-compete agreement before eventually launching a separate fragrance venture, Jo Loves, reflecting a notable founder-departure story within the broader beauty industry. Jo Malone's combination of its distinctive fragrance-layering marketing concept and its founder's own subsequent departure and relaunch story has made it one of the most distinctively positioned fragrance brands in modern luxury retail.
