Dodge Challenger
The modern Dodge Challenger launched for the 2008 model year as a deliberately retro-styled homage to the original 1970s Challenger, and unlike its Camaro and Mustang rivals — both of which moved to smaller, more modern platforms during their own retro-revival redesigns — Dodge kept the reborn Challenger on a notably larger, heavier chassis shared with the Charger sedan, giving it a distinctly bigger, more substantial footprint than its two direct competitors. That extra size and weight became almost irrelevant once Dodge began stuffing genuinely enormous engines into the car: the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat introduced a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 producing 707 horsepower in a mass-production car available at a Dodge dealership, a power figure that stunned the industry and that Dodge kept escalating further with later Hellcat Redeye and Demon variants. The 2018 Challenger SRT Demon pushed the formula to its logical extreme, arriving from the factory with a supercharged engine capable of running high-9-second quarter-mile times on drag radials — a genuinely purpose-built drag-strip weapon sold with a full factory warranty, something no other mainstream manufacturer had attempted at that performance level. Built at Stellantis's Brampton Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, the Challenger's unapologetic embrace of straight-line, big-power performance over the more balanced handling focus its rivals increasingly emphasized made it the muscle car most explicitly built around the classic 1960s-and-'70s ethos of raw horsepower above nearly everything else, right up until Dodge ended gasoline-engine Challenger production in 2023.
VS
Chevrolet Camaro
The Chevrolet Camaro launched for the 1967 model year as General Motors' direct response to the runaway success of the Ford Mustang, arriving roughly two and a half years after the Mustang's own 1964 debut and kicking off one of the longest-running head-to-head rivalries in American automotive history. Its Z/28 performance package, developed specifically to homologate the Camaro for Trans-Am racing, paired a high-revving small-block V8 with upgraded suspension and brakes, and the Camaro went on to win the Trans-Am Championship in 1968 and 1969 — a genuine racing pedigree that gave the street car's performance reputation real competitive credibility beyond marketing claims alone. Chevrolet discontinued the Camaro entirely in 2002 amid declining pony-car sales industry-wide, only to revive it for the 2010 model year on a rear-wheel-drive platform shared with Australian-market Holden vehicles, timed deliberately to compete directly against Ford's own recently redesigned retro-styled Mustang — a rivalry both companies leaned into publicly, down to dueling magazine comparison tests and dealership-lot bragging rights. Built at GM's plant in Lansing, Michigan for its most recent generations, the Camaro's on-and-off six-decade rivalry with the Mustang — including that notable early-2000s gap where GM effectively conceded the segment before returning to fight for it again — remains one of the most enduring brand-versus-brand storylines in the entire history of American performance cars.
