Don Omar
Don Omar, one of reggaeton's foundational stars during the genre's early-2000s emergence from Puerto Rico's underground music scene, helped establish much of reggaeton's core commercial template alongside contemporaries including Daddy Yankee during the genre's first major international breakthrough period. His 2004 album The Last Don became one of the best-selling reggaeton albums of that era, and Don Omar's combination of aggressive, rhythmically dense production with genuine rapping technical skill established him as one of the genre's most respected early commercial pioneers. His songs featured prominently in the Fast & Furious film franchise soundtracks, giving Don Omar's music significant mainstream American exposure beyond reggaeton's traditional Latino audience during a period when the genre was still building broader crossover recognition. His combination of foundational early reggaeton commercial success and his significant mainstream American film soundtrack exposure through the Fast & Furious franchise has made Don Omar one of the most historically significant pioneering figures in reggaeton's development into a globally recognized genre.
VS
Ozuna
Ozuna became one of the most-streamed artists in the world during the mid-to-late 2010s, and his combination of reggaeton with more melodic, R&B-influenced Latin trap production helped establish him as one of the genre's most commercially dominant artists of that specific period. His 2017 debut album Odisea became one of the best-selling Latin albums of the decade, and Ozuna's rapid commercial ascent, achieved relatively quickly after his emergence from Puerto Rico's underground Latin trap scene, reflected the genre's continued massive streaming-driven global growth. Ozuna's melodic, singing-forward vocal delivery, distinguishing him somewhat from more purely rap-focused reggaeton contemporaries, gave his music broader crossover appeal into mainstream Latin pop audiences beyond reggaeton's traditional core listenership. His combination of rapid commercial breakthrough and his sustained streaming dominance during reggaeton's peak mid-2010s global growth period has made Ozuna one of the most commercially significant artists in the genre's modern streaming-era history.
