Dunkirk
Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2017, depicts the real 1940 evacuation of more than 330,000 Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk, France, told through three interweaving timelines — land, sea, and air — that unfold across different actual durations, from a single hour of aerial combat to a week of events on the beach. Nolan's decision to shoot substantial portions of the film using large-format IMAX cameras, unusual for a war film, gave the movie's aerial dogfight and beach evacuation sequences a scale and visual clarity distinct from the more grounded, handheld combat cinematography typical of many contemporary war films. The film minimizes traditional dialogue-driven exposition and character backstory in favor of sustained tension and immersive sound design, an approach Nolan deliberately chose to convey the visceral, disorienting experience of the evacuation rather than a more conventional character-driven war narrative. Dunkirk's production filmed extensively at the actual historical location in France where the real evacuation took place, and its combination of large-format visual scale, minimal dialogue, and genuine historical location filming gave the film a documentary-adjacent immediacy that distinguished it from more traditionally structured war film narratives.
VS
Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1998, opens with a roughly 25-minute depiction of the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach so viscerally intense and technically realistic that numerous veteran organizations reported combat veterans experiencing genuine distress or leaving screenings, and the sequence remains widely regarded as one of the most realistic combat scenes ever filmed. Cinematographer Janusz Kamiński's decision to strip protective coatings from the camera lenses and desaturate the film's color palette gave the movie a harsh, degraded visual texture deliberately intended to evoke authentic World War II newsreel and combat photography rather than a more conventionally polished Hollywood war film look. The film's central premise, a small squad sent behind enemy lines to retrieve a single surviving soldier after his three brothers were killed in action, was loosely inspired by the real story of the Niland brothers, whose family experienced a similar wartime tragedy that prompted the US military's actual "sole survivor policy." Spielberg's technical achievement in the opening battle sequence directly influenced the visual and sound design approach of virtually every major war film that followed, and Saving Private Ryan's combination of unprecedented combat realism and genuine emotional weight has made it the benchmark against which subsequent war films are frequently measured.
