Earl Anthony
Earl Anthony became the first professional bowler to earn more than $100,000 in a single season, in 1975, a milestone that reflected both his own dominance and the broader commercial growth of professional bowling as a televised sport during the 1970s and early 1980s. His smooth, understated bowling style and his left-handed delivery, relatively uncommon among elite bowlers of his era, made Anthony one of the most technically admired players in PBA Tour history, and he won 43 career PBA titles, a total that stood as the tour record for decades. Anthony was named PBA Player of the Year six times, a level of sustained dominance across multiple different seasons that reflected consistency rather than a single standout peak year, and his television career as a golf color commentator after his bowling career further extended his public visibility. His combination of technical precision and sustained tour dominance throughout the peak years of professional bowling's television popularity made Anthony the sport's biggest star during an era when PBA Tour events drew genuinely significant network television ratings, a level of mainstream visibility the sport has never fully recaptured since.
VS
Mark Roth
Mark Roth won 34 career PBA Tour titles and is widely credited with revolutionizing bowling technique through his powerful, high-revolution "power stroke" delivery, a style that generated significantly more ball hook and pin action than the smoother, more controlled deliveries common among his contemporaries. His unconventional, self-taught technique was initially considered unorthodox by traditional bowling instructors, but Roth's sustained tour success throughout the late 1970s and 1980s proved the approach's effectiveness and directly influenced a generation of subsequent bowlers who adopted variations of his higher-revolution style. Roth was named PBA Player of the Year four times, and his combination of raw power and technical innovation made him one of the most influential stylistic figures in the sport's history, credited with helping usher bowling technique away from its more traditionally conservative delivery approach. His influence on subsequent bowling technique is comparable to a significant swing-change influence in golf, and Roth's power-based delivery style became the technical foundation that many of the sport's subsequent power players built their own games around in the decades following his prime.
