Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy joined "Saturday Night Live" at just 19 years old in 1980 and is widely credited with helping save the show during a critically panned early-1980s period, before launching a stand-up career alongside his film work that produced two landmark concert films. His 1983 concert film "Delirious" and 1987 follow-up "Raw" are both frequently cited among the greatest stand-up specials ever recorded, showcasing the same high-energy, character-driven performance style that also defined his film comedy work throughout the decade. Murphy's subsequent decades-long film career, spanning broad studio comedies and later more dramatic and family-oriented roles, made him one of the most commercially successful actors to emerge from a stand-up comedy background. Murphy's combination of his history-making early "Saturday Night Live" run and his landmark "Delirious" and "Raw" concert films has made him one of the most influential comedians in American entertainment history.
VS
George Carlin
George Carlin built a stand-up career spanning five decades, evolving from a clean-cut 1960s television comedian into one of the most influential and confrontational social critics in American comedy, known for his dense, meticulously written material on language, religion, and American hypocrisy. His 1972 routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" led directly to his arrest for disturbing the peace and later became the basis for the landmark 1978 Supreme Court case FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, which upheld the government's authority to regulate indecent content on public airwaves. Carlin recorded 14 stand-up comedy specials for HBO between 1977 and his death in 2008, an unmatched run that made him one of the network's longest-running and most consistently acclaimed recurring performers, and he won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums. Carlin's combination of his legally consequential "Seven Words" routine and his unmatched decades-long run of HBO specials has made him one of the most influential stand-up comedians in American history.
