Eighth Grade
Eighth Grade, released in 2018 and written and directed by comedian Bo Burnham in his feature directorial debut, follows a socially anxious eighth-grade girl navigating the final week of middle school while documenting her own life through anxious, largely unwatched self-help YouTube videos. The film's unusually direct engagement with smartphone and social media culture's specific effect on contemporary adolescent anxiety distinguished it from earlier coming-of-age films made before smartphones and constant social media use had become central to teenage social life. Elsie Fisher's performance as the film's protagonist, praised for its naturalistic, deeply awkward authenticity, captured a specific kind of contemporary teenage social anxiety that critics widely noted felt distinct from more stylized or heightened depictions of adolescent awkwardness in earlier films. Burnham, who built his own early career through internet video platforms before transitioning to comedy and filmmaking, brought a particularly informed perspective to the film's depiction of how social media shapes contemporary teenage self-image and social anxiety, and Eighth Grade received widespread critical acclaim for its authentic and empathetic portrayal.

The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club, released in 1985 and written and directed by John Hughes, follows five high school students from different social cliques forced to spend a Saturday together in detention, and the film became one of the defining depictions of American teenage social dynamics in 1980s film. Its structure, largely confined to a single school library setting across one day, relies almost entirely on extended dialogue between the five central characters gradually breaking down their initial social stereotypes and revealing genuine emotional vulnerability beneath their assumed social roles. The film's closing narration, in which the characters collectively articulate the labels others have assigned them — "a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal" — before rejecting the simplicity of those categories, became one of the most widely quoted passages in teen film history. Hughes's broader body of 1980s teen films, including this one, established a template for taking adolescent emotional experiences seriously as genuine dramatic material rather than purely comedic fodder, and The Breakfast Club remains the film most frequently cited as the defining example of that approach.
