El Matador State Beach
El Matador State Beach, tucked below dramatic sandstone cliffs along Malibu's coastline, is known for its distinctive sea stack rock formations rising directly out of the surf, natural sea caves carved into the cliffside, and a small, secluded feel achieved through a steep, limited-access staircase down from the coastal bluff parking area. Its dramatic rock formations have made it one of the most frequently photographed beaches in the LA area, particularly popular for wedding and engagement photography specifically because of the visually striking natural sea arches and stacks that distinguish it clearly from the area's flatter, more open beaches. The beach's limited parking, small size, and lack of lifeguard staffing give it a genuinely more rugged, undeveloped character than Malibu's larger, more infrastructure-heavy beaches, appealing specifically to visitors seeking a quieter, more scenic alternative to Zuma or Santa Monica. For a Los Angeles beaches list, El Matador is the essential "the dramatic, photogenic one" entry — a small, cliff-backed Malibu beach whose natural sea stacks and caves have made it one of the most visually striking and frequently photographed stretches of coastline in the entire city.
VS
Santa Monica State Beach
Santa Monica State Beach, anchored by the Santa Monica Pier and its 1909-built structure, is the beach most associated with Los Angeles internationally, a wide, flat stretch of sand backed by the pier's amusement park, the historic 1922 Looff Hippodrome carousel, and Palisades Park along the bluff above. Its position at the western terminus of Route 66, marked by a sign near the pier, gives the beach a specific symbolic status as the literal endpoint of the historic cross-country highway, a landmark that draws visitors well beyond those simply seeking a day at the beach. The beach's gentle, sandy-bottom surf and long paved bike path running from Santa Monica down through Venice make it one of the most consistently accessible and multi-use beaches in the LA area, drawing cyclists, joggers, and sunbathers alike along the same shoreline. For a Los Angeles beaches list, Santa Monica State Beach is the essential "the one everyone pictures" entry — the pier-anchored, Route 66-ending beach that remains the single most internationally recognized stretch of sand in the entire city.
