Emory University
Emory University, founded in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, transformed into a major research university largely through a series of massive gifts from the Woodruff family, whose fortune came from Coca-Cola — the company's Atlanta headquarters and the university's close historical ties to it remain a defining part of Emory's institutional identity. The university's proximity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, headquartered directly across the street from campus, gives Emory's public health and infectious disease researchers an unusually close working relationship with the country's leading public health agency, one that intensified visibly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emory's Goizueta Business School and its medical school have each built strong national reputations, and the university's Rollins School of Public Health is consistently ranked among the very best in the country, reflecting Emory's broader institutional strength in health sciences and biomedical research. The university's wooded, hilly Atlanta campus and its research budget, funded substantially by continued Woodruff family and Coca-Cola-linked philanthropy, have let Emory build a private research university profile that punches well above its relatively modest undergraduate enrollment of around 7,000 students.
VS
Agnes Scott College
Agnes Scott College, founded in 1889, is a small women's liberal arts college in Decatur, just outside Atlanta, that has built a reputation as one of the most academically rigorous and internationally minded women's colleges in the country, despite an undergraduate enrollment of fewer than 1,000 students. The college's "SUMMIT" curriculum, which guarantees every student a paid internship, a global learning experience, and leadership training built directly into their four years, reflects a deliberate institutional emphasis on translating a liberal arts education into concrete post-graduation career outcomes. Agnes Scott has one of the most racially and ethnically diverse student bodies of any women's college in the country, a demographic profile the school has actively cultivated as part of its broader institutional identity and that distinguishes it from some peer women's colleges in the Northeast. The college's small size and its location just a short train ride from downtown Atlanta give students access to a major metropolitan area's internship and cultural opportunities while maintaining the close-knit, discussion-based classroom experience typical of small liberal arts colleges, a combination that's helped Agnes Scott maintain strong application numbers even as many other women's colleges nationally have struggled with enrollment.
