En Vogue
En Vogue, formed in Oakland in 1989, built their identity around exceptionally tight, technically sophisticated four-part vocal harmonies, distinguishing the group from contemporaries more reliant on choreography or a single standout lead vocalist rather than genuinely shared harmonic vocal arrangement. Their 1992 song "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and other early-1990s hits established En Vogue as one of the most vocally accomplished girl groups of the era, and the group's sophisticated harmony style directly influenced numerous subsequent R&B vocal groups. The group's polished, fashion-forward visual image, reflected in their name itself, combined genuine vocal technical excellence with a deliberately glamorous public presentation that distinguished En Vogue from girl groups marketed with a more overtly youthful or playful image. En Vogue's combination of technically sophisticated vocal harmony arrangement and sustained early-1990s commercial success established them as one of the most musically respected girl groups of their era, with an influence on subsequent R&B vocal harmony style that's remained significant among musicians and vocal arrangers.
VS
The Ronettes
The Ronettes, formed in New York's Spanish Harlem in the early 1960s, became one of the definitive girl groups of the era through their collaboration with producer Phil Spector, whose elaborate "Wall of Sound" production technique gave their recordings a dense, orchestral quality that distinguished them from more sparsely produced contemporaries. Their 1963 single "Be My Baby," built around drummer Hal Blaine's instantly recognizable opening drum pattern, became one of the most influential and frequently referenced pop recordings in music history, cited by numerous major subsequent musicians, including Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, as a foundational creative influence. Lead singer Ronnie Spector's later marriage to and eventual acrimonious divorce from producer Phil Spector, whom she described in her memoir as controlling and abusive throughout their relationship, became a significant and painful part of the group's broader historical legacy. The Ronettes' combination of Spector's groundbreaking "Wall of Sound" production and Ronnie Spector's distinctive, emotionally raw vocal delivery established them as one of the most musically influential girl groups of the early 1960s "girl group era," with a production influence still audible in popular music production decades later.
