Enter the Dragon
"Enter the Dragon" (1973), starring Bruce Lee in his final completed film before his death, follows a martial artist infiltrating a criminal organization's tournament on a remote island, becoming the film most responsible for bringing Hong Kong martial arts cinema to mainstream American audiences. Lee's genuinely revolutionary on-screen combat presence, combining real martial arts mastery with a magnetic screen charisma, established a new international standard for action filmmaking that directly shaped the subsequent decades of both Hong Kong and American action cinema. The film's American co-production status and international commercial success helped trigger the broader 1970s "kung fu craze" across Western pop culture, introducing Chinese martial arts cinema to audiences who had virtually no prior exposure to the genre. Its combination of Bruce Lee's genre-defining central performance and its role triggering global mainstream interest in Chinese martial arts cinema has made "Enter the Dragon" one of the most historically significant martial arts films ever made.
VS
Hero
"Hero" (2002), directed by Zhang Yimou, tells a politically layered story of a nameless warrior recounting his defeat of assassins plotting against China's first emperor, structured around competing, contradictory retellings of the same events from different narrators' perspectives. Its visually distinct use of color, with each retold version of the story rendered in its own dominant color palette, gave the film an unusually painterly, deliberately artificial visual style that distinguished it sharply from wuxia's more traditionally naturalistic cinematography. The film's large-scale desert and lake battle sequences, choreographed by Ching Siu-tung, combined the genre's traditional acrobatic combat style with an unprecedented sense of visual scale and grandeur for a Chinese-language martial arts production of its era. Its combination of its visually innovative color-coded narrative structure and its large-scale action choreography has made "Hero" one of the most artistically ambitious and internationally influential wuxia films of the 2000s.
