Explosions in the Sky
Explosions in the Sky brought post-rock's instrumental, crescendo-driven sound to a significantly wider mainstream audience than most genre contemporaries, largely through their acclaimed score for the 2004 film "Friday Night Lights" and its subsequent television adaptation. Their 2003 album "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" became one of the genre's most commercially successful and widely recommended entry points, pairing soaring, melodic guitar interplay with a more emotionally direct accessibility than some of post-rock's more abrasive or experimental contemporaries. The band's subsequent film and television scoring work, extending well beyond "Friday Night Lights" into numerous other soundtrack projects, demonstrated post-rock's particular suitability for visual media, a connection few other bands in the genre capitalized on as successfully. Their combination of "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place's" broad accessibility and their genre-expanding film scoring success has made Explosions in the Sky one of the most commercially significant bands in post-rock's history.
VS
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Godspeed You! Black Emperor built one of post-rock's most influential and politically charged catalogs, releasing sprawling, largely instrumental compositions built around slow-building crescendos, found-sound samples, and an explicitly anti-capitalist collective ethos rare among rock bands of any genre. Their 1997 debut "F♯ A♯ ∞" and 2000 follow-up "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" became foundational texts of the post-rock genre, establishing the extended, multi-movement compositional structure that countless subsequent instrumental rock bands directly modeled their own work on. The band's collective, largely anonymous membership structure and refusal to engage with conventional music industry promotion, including rare interviews and a deliberately opaque public presence, reinforced the same anti-commercial ethos embedded in their music itself. Their combination of "F♯ A♯ ∞" and "Lift Your Skinny Fists's" genre-defining compositional influence and their uncompromising collective ethos has made Godspeed You! Black Emperor widely regarded as the most influential band in post-rock's history.
