Faker
Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok has won the League of Legends World Championship four times across a career spanning more than a decade, and his sustained dominance at the highest level of competition, playing for T1 continuously since his 2013 debut, is widely regarded as unmatched in the history of competitive gaming. His technical mechanical skill and in-game decision-making, particularly in the mid-lane role, established Faker as the individual player most credited with elevating League of Legends from a niche competitive game into a globally significant esport with stadium-filling championship events. Faker's continued elite-level competitiveness into his late twenties, an age at which most professional gamers have historically retired given the reflexes and reaction-time demands of high-level competitive gaming, has made his sustained career longevity nearly as significant as his championship total. His combination of unprecedented championship success and his more than decade-long sustained excellence with a single organization has made Faker the player most universally cited as the greatest League of Legends competitor, and arguably the greatest esports athlete, in the history of competitive gaming.
VS
N0tail
Johan "N0tail" Sundstein won The International, Dota 2's premier annual championship tournament, twice as team captain of OG, and his back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019 made his team the first in the tournament's history to win consecutive championships. His 2019 championship victory earned OG a prize pool share exceeding $15 million, reflecting Dota 2's crowdfunded prize pool model that had grown The International into one of the largest total prize pools in all of professional sports by that point, esports or otherwise. N0tail's leadership and strategic decision-making as team captain, including his willingness to make significant roster changes even shortly before major tournaments, reflected a management approach that proved unusually successful in building sustained championship-level team chemistry. His combination of back-to-back championships at the sport's most prestigious and highest-paying tournament, along with his significant role in OG's broader institutional success as an organization, has made N0tail one of the most statistically and financially significant competitors in Dota 2's history.
