Federal Donuts
Federal Donuts was founded in Philadelphia in 2011 by chef Michael Solomonov and restaurateur Steve Cook, built around a genuinely unusual dual concept combining fresh-fried donuts with Korean-style fried chicken served from the very same kitchen and counter. The shop's donuts, made fresh throughout the day in small batches with rotating seasonal glazes, reflected a chef-driven approach to a category more commonly associated with mass-produced, shelf-stable products at larger chains. Solomonov's broader culinary reputation, including his James Beard Award-winning Israeli restaurant Zahav, brought serious chef credibility to Federal Donuts's more playful, hybrid concept, helping it expand into multiple Philadelphia locations and beyond. Federal Donuts's combination of its unusual donuts-and-fried-chicken dual concept and its serious chef-driven pedigree has made it one of the most distinctive modern donut shops in the country.
VS
Voodoo Doughnut
Voodoo Doughnut was founded in Portland, Oregon in 2003 by Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson and Tres Shannon, built around deliberately outrageous, novelty-driven donut creations topped with ingredients like breakfast cereal, bacon, and Pepto-Bismol-pink frosting, distinguishing it sharply from traditional donut shop offerings. The shop's original single Old Town Portland location, open 24 hours and famous for hosting spontaneous wedding ceremonies performed by staff who were deputized as licensed officiants, became a genuine only-in-Portland cultural landmark and tourist attraction independent of its donuts alone. Voodoo Doughnut's Bacon Maple Bar, combining a maple-frosted donut with strips of bacon on top, became one of its most widely imitated signature creations, helping popularize the broader trend of savory-sweet donut combinations across the wider donut industry. Voodoo Doughnut's combination of its deliberately outrageous novelty creations and its quirky, only-in-Portland shop culture has made it one of the most distinctive donut destinations in the country.
