Fender
Fender was founded by Leo Fender, who introduced the Telecaster in 1950, widely credited as the first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar mass-produced for the general market, and followed it with the Stratocaster in 1954, which became one of the most widely used and imitated electric guitar designs in music history. Leo Fender himself was notably not a skilled guitar player, instead approaching his instrument designs primarily as a practical engineer focused on manufacturability, durability, and tone, an unusual origin for instruments that became so foundational to electric guitar music. Fender's instruments became closely associated with numerous foundational rock, blues, and country guitarists, and the Stratocaster in particular became so iconic that its body shape has remained largely unchanged since 1954, still recognized instantly by both musicians and non-musicians alike. Fender's combination of the Telecaster's status as the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar and the Stratocaster's enduring six-decade design influence has made it one of the most historically significant instrument brands in the history of popular music.
VS
Roland
Roland was founded in 1972 in Osaka, Japan by Ikutaro Kakehashi, and the company became one of the most significant manufacturers of electronic musical instruments, including synthesizers, drum machines, and digital pianos, playing a foundational role in the broader development of electronic music technology. Roland's TR-808 drum machine, released in 1980, initially received a lukewarm commercial reception for its distinctly synthetic, non-realistic drum sounds, but it later became one of the most influential and widely sampled pieces of music technology ever created, foundational to the development of hip-hop, house, and electronic dance music production. Kakehashi also played a central role developing MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), the standardized digital communication protocol that let electronic instruments from different manufacturers communicate with each other, a foundational technical standard that transformed electronic music production industry-wide starting in the early 1980s. Roland's combination of the TR-808's outsized influence on modern music production and Kakehashi's foundational role developing the MIDI standard has made it one of the most technologically significant instrument brands in electronic music history.
