Fenway Park
Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912, with the Red Sox beating the New York Highlanders 7–6 in 11 innings in the ballpark's very first game. More than a century later it's still in everyday use, making it the oldest active ballpark in Major League Baseball and the last surviving stadium from the short-lived Federal League era still hosting regular games. The park has been rebuilt around its original bones more than once — a substantial reconstruction in 1934 and a wave of renovations beginning in the early 2000s that, by some estimates, extended its usable life out to around 2062. Current seating capacity runs to roughly 37,305 for day games and 37,755 at night, modest by modern ballpark standards but part of what gives Fenway its famously tight, close-to-the-field feel, including the Green Monster looming over left field. On March 7, 2012, its centennial year, Fenway was added to the National Register of Historic Places, formal recognition for a ballpark that had already been functioning as a de facto historic landmark for decades before the designation made it official. Watching a game there is as much about sitting inside a piece of early-20th-century stadium architecture as it is about the baseball itself. For a Boston attractions list, Fenway Park is the essential "history you can still buy a ticket to" entry — a working, National Register-listed ballpark that's hosted Red Sox games continuously since 1912, longer than any other stadium currently in the majors.

New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium opened on June 20, 1969, on Boston's Central Wharf, designed by architect Peter Chermayeff of Cambridge Seven Associates as a nonprofit public aquarium built around a single dramatic centerpiece rather than a series of smaller tanks spread through the building. That centerpiece is the Giant Ocean Tank, a 200,000-gallon cylindrical exhibit built to simulate a Caribbean coral reef, viewable from multiple levels through 67 acrylic windows as sea turtles, sharks, and reef fish circle past. It draws roughly 1.3 million visitors a year, making it one of the more heavily visited attractions in the city on its own. Beyond the public-facing exhibits, the aquarium runs real research and rescue operations most visitors never see directly: the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life studies North Atlantic right whales, one of the most endangered large whale species on Earth, while the aquarium's Quincy Animal Care Center rescues and rehabilitates hundreds of sea turtles every year. From April through October, the aquarium also runs whale-watching trips out to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, extending the experience well past the building itself. For a Boston attractions list, the New England Aquarium is the essential "science museum that also happens to be thrilling" entry — a Central Wharf landmark built around a 200,000-gallon coral-reef tank, backed by genuine whale-conservation research most visitors only glimpse in passing.
