Fiat 124 Spider
The original Fiat 124 Sport Spider launched in 1966 with styling by Pininfarina, built on a shortened version of the Fiat 124 sedan's platform, and it went on to become one of the best-selling Italian sports cars ever exported to the United States, with production continuing all the way through 1985 under Fiat and later Pininfarina's own direct ownership of the model. Fiat revived the 124 Spider name in 2016 through a genuinely unusual partnership with Mazda, building the new car on the same platform as the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata and assembling it on the same production line in Hiroshima, Japan, alongside its Mazda sibling. Despite sharing its chassis, top mechanism, and much of its structure with the Miata, the revived 124 Spider was tuned with its own turbocharged engine and distinct styling specifically designed to evoke the original 1966 car's long hood and rounded Italian lines, giving Fiat a genuinely differentiated product rather than a simple badge-engineered clone. Built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant under that shared-platform arrangement, the modern 124 Spider's combination of classic Pininfarina-inspired Italian styling and proven, Miata-derived Japanese engineering made it a genuinely distinctive entry in the modern affordable roadster market during its 2016-2020 production run.
VS
Jaguar E-Type
The Jaguar E-Type debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show after a Jaguar test driver reportedly drove through the night from the factory in Coventry to make the unveiling on time, and the car's long hood, curved fenders, and low, sweeping roadster silhouette made an immediate sensation among journalists and buyers alike. Enzo Ferrari himself is widely quoted as having called the E-Type "the most beautiful car ever made," a genuinely striking endorsement from a rival manufacturer whose own cars were themselves considered the standard for automotive beauty at the time. Beyond its looks, the E-Type backed up the styling with genuine performance for its era — a top speed of around 150 mph and a price dramatically lower than comparably fast Italian exotics, a combination that made it accessible to a far wider range of buyers than the exotic sports cars it was visually and performance-wise competing against. Built at Jaguar's historic Browns Lane plant in Coventry, England, the E-Type's status as a design icon has only grown since its production ended in 1974, and it remains one of the most instantly recognizable and consistently referenced convertibles in the entire history of automotive design.
