Fiji
Fiji consists of more than 330 islands in the South Pacific, of which only around a third are permanently inhabited, and the country's tourism industry has built its identity substantially around the phrase "Fiji Time," an informal cultural concept referring to the country's deliberately relaxed, unhurried pace of life. The country holds the world's largest soft coral reef system in its waters off Taveuni Island, drawing serious scuba divers specifically for the density and variety of soft coral species, a marine ecosystem distinct from the hard-coral reef systems more commonly associated with other Pacific diving destinations. Fiji's kava ceremony, a traditional welcoming ritual involving a mildly sedative drink made from the ground root of the kava plant, remains a genuinely significant part of Fijian cultural life rather than a purely staged tourist performance, and visitors are frequently invited to participate directly in village kava ceremonies as part of cultural tourism experiences. Fiji's combination of its hundreds of islands, the world's largest soft coral reef system, and its still-genuinely-practiced kava ceremony tradition has made it one of the most culturally distinctive and consistently popular South Pacific island destinations for international travelers.
VS
Maldives
The Maldives consists of roughly 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, and with an average elevation of just under five feet above sea level, it's the lowest-lying country on Earth, a geography that's made it one of the nations most directly and publicly vocal about the existential risk posed by rising sea levels. The country's tourism model is built almost entirely around the "one island, one resort" concept, in which most resort islands are developed as a single self-contained property rather than sharing an island with other hotels or local residential communities, a structure that gives most visitors a genuinely private, isolated island experience by design. The Maldivian government held a widely covered underwater cabinet meeting in 2009, with ministers in scuba gear signing a document calling for global carbon emission cuts, a deliberately symbolic event specifically staged to draw international attention to the country's vulnerability to climate change. The Maldives's combination of its extreme low-lying geography, its distinctive one-island-one-resort tourism model, and its high-profile climate change advocacy has made it one of the most exclusive and environmentally significant island destinations in the world.
