First Man
First Man, released in 2018 and directed by Damien Chazelle, dramatizes Neil Armstrong's journey to becoming the first person to walk on the moon, and the film's deliberately intimate, subjective camera work during its spaceflight sequences aimed to convey the genuine physical disorientation and danger of early spaceflight technology. Ryan Gosling's restrained performance as Armstrong, portraying the astronaut's famously private, emotionally guarded public persona, reflected the film's broader interest in the psychological toll of Armstrong's career, including the earlier death of his young daughter, which the film suggests profoundly shaped his emotional reserve. The film's decision not to depict the American flag being physically planted on the moon during the climactic lunar landing sequence generated significant political controversy upon release, with some critics accusing the film of downplaying American patriotic achievement, though the flag does appear visible in wider shots throughout the sequence. First Man's combination of technically rigorous, disorienting depictions of early spaceflight's genuine physical danger and its psychologically intimate portrait of Armstrong's private emotional life gave the film a more somber, introspective tone than most previous space exploration films.

Apollo 13
Apollo 13, released in 1995 and directed by Ron Howard, dramatizes the real 1970 NASA mission that suffered a catastrophic oxygen tank explosion en route to the moon, forcing the crew and NASA's mission control team to improvise a survival plan to bring the astronauts safely back to Earth. The film's mission control sequences were praised for their technical accuracy, achieved partly through extensive consultation with real NASA personnel and astronauts involved in the actual mission, giving the film's depiction of the crisis response genuine procedural authenticity. Its zero-gravity sequences were filmed aboard NASA's actual training aircraft, nicknamed the "Vomit Comet," which briefly simulates weightlessness through parabolic flight, giving the film's space sequences a level of physical authenticity that computer-generated effects couldn't replicate at the time. Tom Hanks's performance as mission commander Jim Lovell, combined with the film's meticulous technical accuracy and its genuine "successful failure" narrative — the mission never reached the moon but succeeded in bringing the crew home alive — made Apollo 13 one of the most critically acclaimed and technically respected space films ever produced.
