Five Guys
Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by Jerry and Janie Murrell, who named the restaurant after their five sons, all of whom worked in the family business as it grew from a single location into a regional chain before beginning national franchise expansion in 2003. The chain built its identity around a deliberately simple, no-frills approach — a short menu of burgers and fries with free toppings and no shakes or specialty sauces beyond basic condiments — along with a policy of serving fries in a paper bag with visibly overflowing extra portions, a small but consistently mentioned detail in customer reviews. Five Guys' fries are cooked exclusively in peanut oil, a sourcing choice the company has maintained company-wide despite peanut allergy concerns, and the chain has built a reputation for displaying bags of potatoes by state of origin directly in-store, a transparency-focused marketing touch few competitors have replicated. Five Guys's combination of its family-founding story, a deliberately simple and consistent menu, and its distinctive peanut-oil fries has made it one of the most recognized names in the "better burger" fast-casual category that emerged and scaled rapidly through the 2000s and 2010s.
VS
In-N-Out Burger
In-N-Out Burger opened in 1948 in Baldwin Park, California, founded by Harry and Esther Snyder, and it's credited as California's first drive-thru hamburger stand, built around a two-way speaker box system Harry Snyder engineered himself so customers could order without a carhop walking out to take their order. The company has maintained a deliberately tiny menu for over 75 years — burgers, fries, and shakes, with almost nothing added since the original lineup — a discipline that's become central to its cult reputation, reinforced by an unofficial "secret menu" of off-menu items like Animal Style that staff will make on request but that's never printed anywhere. In-N-Out has remained privately held by the Snyder family for its entire history, refusing to franchise even as the chain slowly expanded beyond California into neighboring states, a deliberate growth restraint that's let the company maintain consistent quality control across every location rather than ceding standards to independent franchise operators. In-N-Out's combination of a 75-year unchanged menu, its famous secret-menu culture, and its refusal to franchise has made it one of the most culturally significant fast-food burger chains in the country, generating a level of devoted, borderline-obsessive customer loyalty few competitors of its size and price point can match.
