Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album Rumours, written and recorded largely during a period when multiple band members were going through painful romantic breakups with each other simultaneously, channeled that genuine interpersonal turmoil into one of the best-selling albums in music history. The band's combination of Lindsey Buckingham's polished, meticulously layered guitar production and the dual songwriting perspectives of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie gave Fleetwood Mac's mid-to-late-1970s material a smooth, harmonically rich sound that became closely associated with the broader soft rock and yacht rock sensibility of that era. Stevie Nicks's distinctive, ethereal vocal style and her mystical stage persona, including flowing shawls and boots that became her signature visual identity, made her one of the most recognizable and influential female rock stars of the 1970s and beyond. The band's genuinely dramatic internal romantic history — reflected directly in Rumours's lyrics addressing the members' own breakups with each other — gave Fleetwood Mac's smooth, radio-friendly sound an unusually raw emotional authenticity beneath its polished musical surface.
VS
Steely Dan
Steely Dan, formed by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen after they met as students at Bard College, built a reputation for exacting studio perfectionism, reportedly employing dozens of different session musicians on individual tracks until achieving precisely the performance they wanted. Their jazz-influenced chord voicings and famously cryptic, literary lyrics distinguished Steely Dan's songwriting from more straightforward rock contemporaries, and the duo's 1977 album Aja is widely regarded as one of the most sonically pristine and meticulously produced rock albums ever recorded. Becker and Fagen's decision to stop regular touring in the mid-1970s to focus entirely on studio recording, an unusual choice for a commercially successful rock act at the time, reflected the duo's prioritization of studio craft and technical precision over live performance. Steely Dan's combination of jazz-inflected musical sophistication and their exacting studio methodology has made them one of the most retroactively influential acts associated with the smooth, polished "yacht rock" sound later named and popularized as a genre descriptor decades after their initial 1970s commercial peak.
