Folly Beach
Folly Beach, a separately incorporated city just southwest of downtown Charleston, has long branded itself "the Edge of America," building an identity around a laid-back, surf-town culture that stands apart from the more formal, historic character of Charleston proper a short drive away. Its consistent, moderate surf, generated by the way the Folly River inlet and offshore sandbars shape incoming swell, has made it the most significant surf destination on South Carolina's coast, drawing a dedicated local surfing community and hosting regional surf competitions throughout the year. The Folly Beach Fishing Pier, rebuilt and reopened in 1995 after storm damage destroyed its predecessor, extends far out over the Atlantic and has become the beach's central landmark, offering both a fishing destination and simply the best vantage point to take in the shoreline's full length. For a Charleston beaches list, Folly Beach is the essential "surf town" entry — a distinctly laid-back, separately incorporated beach city whose consistent surf and pier have made it the region's most significant surf destination.
VS
Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island
Beachwalker Park, on the southern tip of Kiawah Island roughly 30 minutes from downtown Charleston, offers the only public beach access point on an island otherwise dominated by private resort and residential development, making it the primary way most visitors experience Kiawah's famously wide, uncrowded shoreline. Kiawah Island's beach, roughly ten miles long overall, is regularly cited among the best beaches in the country for its exceptionally wide, hard-packed sand, a quality that has made it a popular spot for beach biking and long, unobstructed walks that longer, narrower beaches elsewhere can't match. The park's more limited public access, funneling visitors specifically through its dedicated parking and entry point rather than allowing beach access along the island's private resort frontage, has helped keep this section of the island's famously pristine beach genuinely uncrowded relative to its overall reputation. For a Charleston beaches list, Beachwalker Park is the essential "wide and pristine" entry — the public gateway to Kiawah Island's exceptionally wide, ten-mile beach, among the most highly regarded stretches of sand on the entire East Coast.
