Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer launched for the 1991 model year and is widely credited with turning the SUV from a niche, truck-based off-roader into a mainstream family vehicle — it became the best-selling SUV in America almost immediately and held that title through most of the 1990s, a run that helped define the entire decade's shift away from the traditional minivan and station wagon. Its most consequential chapter came in 2000-2001, when a wave of rollover accidents linked to Firestone tires fitted on Explorers led to one of the largest tire recalls in US history and a set of congressional hearings that reshaped federal tire-safety regulation — a genuinely difficult period for the nameplate that Ford spent much of the 2000s working to engineer past with redesigned suspension geometry and, eventually, a shift to a safer unibody platform. That 2011 shift to a car-based unibody chassis, moving away from the traditional truck frame the Explorer had used since 1991, mirrored a broader industry move toward crossover-style SUVs built more for comfort and fuel efficiency than serious off-road use — a transition the Explorer helped popularize just as directly as it had popularized the original truck-based SUV boom a decade earlier. Built at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant, the oldest continuously operating auto plant in the country, the Explorer remains one of the best-selling SUVs in American history and the vehicle most directly responsible for making a three-row SUV the default choice for millions of American families who'd have bought a minivan or wagon a decade earlier.
VS
Land Rover Range Rover
The original Range Rover launched in 1970 as a genuinely unusual product for its time: a Land Rover with real off-road engineering — permanent four-wheel drive, coil-spring suspension in place of the harsher leaf springs on contemporary trucks — wrapped in a comparatively upscale, comfortable body aimed at buyers who wanted genuine off-road capability without giving up daily livability. That balance became the entire template for what "luxury SUV" would eventually mean industry-wide, and the Range Rover's reputation only grew from there: it's been used by the British Royal Family for decades, was the first vehicle ever exhibited as a piece of design at the Louvre in Paris (in 1971), and has crossed some of the most demanding overland routes on Earth, including a widely documented Cambridge expedition traverse of South America's Darién Gap in the 1970s. Later generations kept pushing the luxury side further without abandoning the off-road engineering underneath it — air suspension, a Terrain Response system that automatically adjusts the drivetrain for sand, mud, or rock, and, in top trims, an interior finished to a standard that directly competes with dedicated luxury sedans rather than other SUVs. Built at Land Rover's historic Solihull plant in the English Midlands — the same site the company has operated from since 1948 — the Range Rover remains the vehicle most directly responsible for inventing the luxury SUV category, and more than fifty years later it's still the nameplate every other high-end SUV gets measured against.
