Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger was the best-selling compact pickup truck in America through most of the 1980s and '90s, offering a genuinely smaller, more affordable, and easier-to-park alternative to the full-size F-150 at a time when compact trucks from Ford, Toyota, Nissan, and Chevrolet's S-10 all competed fiercely for the same budget-conscious and first-time-truck-buyer segment. Ford discontinued the Ranger in the US after the 2011 model year, even as the global version of the truck continued selling strongly in markets like Australia, South America, and Southeast Asia — a decision that, in hindsight, meant Ford voluntarily ceded the entire compact-truck category to Toyota's Tacoma for nearly a decade, right as SUV and truck sales were beginning their long climb as a share of the overall US market. Ford brought the Ranger back to the US for the 2019 model year, built on the same global "T6" platform underpinning the international Ranger sold across dozens of markets worldwide, specifically to re-enter a midsize truck segment that had grown substantially in Ford's absence and that competitors like the Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Jeep Gladiator had spent the intervening years fighting over without Ford in the mix at all. Built at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant for the US market, the Ranger's decade-long US absence and subsequent return remains one of the more notable strategic reversals in recent pickup-truck history — a genuine acknowledgment that abandoning the compact/midsize segment in 2011 had been a miscalculation Ford spent the 2019 relaunch actively trying to correct.
VS
Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma has been the best-selling midsize pickup truck in the United States for close to two decades running, built on the same reputation for long-term reliability that's defined Toyota's broader lineup — a track record that's made used Tacomas famous for retaining an unusually high percentage of their original sale price, often outpacing depreciation curves of nearly every other vehicle in the segment. Its TRD Pro off-road trim, introduced for the 2015 model year, added Fox Racing internal-bypass shocks, upgraded skid plates, and off-road-tuned suspension geometry specifically aimed at serious overlanding and off-road enthusiasts, a market segment that had grown rapidly through the 2010s and that Toyota moved quickly to capture with a factory-built product rather than leaving to the aftermarket. The Tacoma's reputation was built in no small part outside the mainstream buyer base entirely — it became a favorite of the overlanding and vehicle-based off-road camping community specifically because of its aftermarket support ecosystem and reputation for mechanical longevity well past 200,000 miles, a following that turned into some of the strongest word-of-mouth marketing any midsize truck has enjoyed. Built for the North American market primarily in Toyota's Guanajuato, Mexico plant, the Tacoma's specific combination of best-in-class resale value and a genuine off-road enthusiast following has made it the default midsize truck recommendation for buyers who plan to keep and use a vehicle hard for over a decade rather than trade it in every few years.
