Fort Funston
Fort Funston, at San Francisco's southwestern corner, combines a beach at the base of tall coastal bluffs with one of the most popular hang gliding launch points on the West Coast, its consistent updrafts off the cliff face making it a genuine destination for the sport specifically. The site's former identity as a coastal artillery installation, part of San Francisco's Cold War-era harbor defense system, has left small remnants of military infrastructure still visible among the dunes and bluffs, adding a layer of history to what's now primarily known as a recreation area. Its off-leash dog beach policy, one of the most generous in the city, has made Fort Funston one of the most popular dog-walking destinations in San Francisco, with the bluff-top trails and beach below regularly filled with dogs off leash alongside their owners. For a San Francisco beaches list, Fort Funston is the essential "hang gliders and dogs" entry — a bluff-backed beach combining one of the West Coast's top hang gliding launch points with one of the city's most popular off-leash dog beaches.
VS
Crissy Field
Crissy Field, a restored tidal marsh and waterfront park along the Presidio's northern edge, offers a flat, walkable beach with unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge and passing sailboats, transformed from a decommissioned military airfield into public parkland through a major restoration completed in 2001. Its long, paved promenade running the length of the shoreline makes it one of the most popular spots in the city for walking, jogging, and cycling directly along the water, drawing a steady flow of both tourists and local residents throughout the day. The beach's consistent onshore winds, generated by the same Golden Gate strait dynamics that shape conditions at Baker Beach nearby, have made it a popular launch spot for kiteboarders and windsurfers specifically, a colorful, high-energy scene visible from the shoreline path. For a San Francisco beaches list, Crissy Field is the essential "walk, don't swim" entry — a restored former airfield turned waterfront promenade, offering Golden Gate Bridge views and a steady show of kiteboarders rather than a traditional swimming beach.
