Fort Mill, SC
Fort Mill sits just across the North Carolina-South Carolina border from Charlotte, and it's drawn a substantial wave of corporate relocations over the past two decades — companies including LPL Financial have moved significant operations there specifically to take advantage of South Carolina's lower tax burden while remaining within easy commuting distance of downtown Charlotte. The Anne Springs Close Greenway, a roughly 2,100-acre preserved natural area donated by the Springs family — longtime owners of the Springs Industries textile company that shaped the town's economy for much of the 20th century — gives Fort Mill residents extensive hiking, biking, and equestrian trails immediately adjacent to the town's newer suburban development. Fort Mill's population has grown dramatically since the early 2000s, driven substantially by new master-planned residential communities built specifically to house the influx of corporate relocations and the broader Charlotte metro area's cross-border expansion into York County, South Carolina. Fort Mill's combination of a significant recent wave of corporate headquarters relocations, a large preserved greenway tied to the area's textile-industry history, and rapid population growth has made it one of the more economically dynamic suburbs anywhere in the greater Charlotte metropolitan area, despite sitting across a state line from the city itself.
VS
Matthews, NC
Matthews sits southeast of downtown Charlotte, and its historic downtown, built originally around a late-19th-century railroad depot, has preserved a walkable cluster of small commercial buildings that the town has actively maintained even as new residential subdivisions have filled in much of the surrounding farmland over the past several decades. The town's Matthews Community Farmers' Market, operating on weekends out of the historic downtown area, has become a consistent draw for the broader southeast Charlotte area, reflecting Matthews's continued effort to preserve a small-town commercial identity alongside its growth as a Charlotte-area suburb. Matthews has managed to maintain a somewhat more modest scale of growth than some of its faster-expanding neighbors to the north near Lake Norman, giving it a reputation among Charlotte-area home buyers as one of the more understated, historically grounded suburban towns in Mecklenburg County. Matthews's combination of a preserved historic railroad-depot downtown, an active community farmers market, and comparatively measured growth relative to some of Charlotte's faster-expanding suburbs has made it one of the more quietly appealing small towns anywhere southeast of the city.
