Foundation
"Foundation," published by Isaac Asimov in 1951 as a fix-up of earlier serialized magazine stories, introduced the fictional science of "psychohistory," a mathematical framework capable of predicting the broad future behavior of very large populations even while individual actions remain unpredictable. The novel follows mathematician Hari Seldon's plan to preserve human civilization's knowledge as he predicts the imminent collapse of a vast Galactic Empire, establishing a hidden "Foundation" to shorten the coming dark age from thirty thousand years to a single millennium. Asimov's Foundation series won a one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966, a unique honor reflecting its extraordinary influence, and the series directly inspired numerous subsequent works across science fiction, reportedly including Elon Musk citing it as a formative influence on his own thinking about civilization-scale planning. Foundation's combination of its innovative psychohistory concept and its unique "Best All-Time Series" Hugo recognition has made it one of the most influential science fiction novel series ever written.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," published by Douglas Adams in 1979, began as a BBC radio comedy series before being adapted into a novel following Arthur Dent's journey across the galaxy moments after Earth's demolition to make way for an interstellar bypass. The novel's absurdist, deeply comedic approach to science fiction, including the now-famous running joke that the ultimate answer to "life, the universe, and everything" is simply the number 42, distinguished it sharply from the more purely speculative or philosophical tone common in much of the genre. Adams's book became a genuine cultural touchstone well beyond typical science fiction readership, with phrases and concepts from the novel, including "Don't Panic" and the number 42 itself, entering broader popular culture and internet meme culture decades after its original publication. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's combination of its absurdist comedic approach to science fiction and its enduring cultural touchstone status has made it one of the most beloved and widely referenced science fiction novels ever written.
