Four Rooms
"Four Rooms" (1995) tells four separate stories set in the same hotel on New Year's Eve, directed by four different filmmakers — Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino — and unified by Tim Roth's bellhop character connecting each segment. The film's format, giving four distinctive directorial voices complete creative control over their own 20-minute segment, produced a genuinely uneven but tonally varied result ranging from broad slapstick to dark comic tension, showcasing the anthology format's capacity for stylistic contrast within a single feature. Robert Rodriguez's segment "The Misbehavers" and Tarantino's closing "The Man from Hollywood" became the film's most frequently cited sections, with Tarantino's segment drawing directly from an Alfred Hitchcock Presents television episode as its structural basis. Its combination of a distinctive four-director format and its cult following among fans of its individual contributing filmmakers has made "Four Rooms" one of the most structurally notable anthology films of the 1990s.
VS
The Kentucky Fried Movie
"The Kentucky Fried Movie" (1977) strings together dozens of short comedic sketches parodying television commercials, news broadcasts, and film genres, written by the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team who would go on to direct "Airplane!" three years later. Its rapid-fire, loosely connected sketch format, more akin to televised sketch comedy than a traditional narrative anthology, established a comedic anthology style that directly influenced the ZAZ team's subsequent spoof films and the broader genre-parody comedy tradition that followed. The film's segment "A Fistful of Yen," a lengthy parody of "Enter the Dragon," became its most fondly remembered and frequently referenced individual sketch among the film's cult following. Its combination of its influence on the ZAZ team's subsequent spoof comedy career and its foundational role in sketch-style comedic anthology filmmaking has made "The Kentucky Fried Movie" one of the genre's most influential cult entries.
