Fox Chapel, PA
Fox Chapel sits along the Allegheny River northeast of downtown Pittsburgh, and its heavily wooded, large-lot residential development has made it one of the most consistently affluent and lowest-density suburbs in the entire Pittsburgh metropolitan area, a character the borough has actively preserved through decades of restrictive zoning. The Fox Chapel Golf Club, established in the 1920s, has hosted significant amateur and professional golf events over the decades and remains a central social institution for the surrounding community, reflecting the borough's origins as a retreat for wealthy Pittsburgh industrial and business families in the early 20th century. The borough's winding, heavily forested roads and lack of a dense central commercial district have kept Fox Chapel feeling more like a rural estate community than a conventional suburb, a deliberate contrast to the more commercially developed suburbs closer to the city. Fox Chapel's combination of large, wooded residential lots, a historically significant private golf club, and a deliberately preserved low-density, rural-feeling character has made it one of the wealthiest and most exclusive suburbs anywhere in the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
VS
Mount Lebanon, PA
Mount Lebanon developed substantially in the early 20th century as one of Pittsburgh's first streetcar suburbs, with the Pittsburgh Railways Company's Beechview-Mount Lebanon line, opened in 1913, connecting the growing community directly to downtown Pittsburgh and shaping much of its early residential development pattern along the rail corridor. That streetcar line has survived essentially intact into the present day as part of the Pittsburgh Regional Transit light rail system, making Mount Lebanon one of the relatively few American suburbs still served by a rail transit line dating back more than a century to the original streetcar era. The community's Uptown business district, built along Washington Road near the light rail station, has retained a walkable, small-town commercial character that's stood in contrast to the more purely residential development found in some neighboring South Hills communities. Mount Lebanon's combination of a rare, still-operating century-old streetcar-to-light-rail transit connection and a walkable Uptown commercial core has made it one of the more historically continuous and consistently desirable suburbs anywhere in Pittsburgh's South Hills region.
