Francesco Friedrich
Francesco Friedrich has won Olympic gold medals in bobsled across the 2018 and 2022 Winter Games in both the two-man and four-man events, sweeping all four available gold medals across those two Olympics and establishing himself as the most dominant bobsled pilot of the modern era. His combination of world championship titles, numbering among the most in bobsled history, and his sustained dominance across both major event formats simultaneously has made Friedrich the individual most frequently cited as the greatest bobsled pilot currently competing, and arguably in the sport's history. Friedrich's technical precision and his sled's consistently fast start times, a critical factor in overall race performance given how much of a bobsled run's final time is determined in its opening seconds, reflect Germany's continued institutional and technological dominance of the sport across multiple generations of elite pilots. His combined four Olympic gold medals across two Games, along with his extensive World Championship title collection, place Friedrich among the most statistically dominant bobsled athletes in Olympic history, continuing Germany's sustained tradition of bobsled excellence established by earlier pilots like André Lange.
VS
Steven Holcomb
Steven Holcomb piloted the American four-man bobsled team to Olympic gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, ending a 62-year American gold medal drought in the event that had persisted since the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics, making it one of the most significant American bobsled achievements in Olympic history. His personal story included overcoming a degenerative eye disease, keratoconus, that had left him nearly legally blind and threatened to end his competitive driving career entirely before an experimental corrective surgical procedure restored his vision enough to continue competing at the elite level. Holcomb's condition and his subsequent recovery became a significant part of his public story, and his eventual Olympic gold, achieved after a period when doctors had suggested his competitive career might be over, added particular resonance to America's long-awaited return to bobsled's top step of the podium. His death in 2017 at 37, attributed to a combination of sleep medication and alcohol, ended the career of one of American bobsled's most significant pilots, and Holcomb's 2010 gold remains one of the most celebrated individual achievements in the history of US Olympic bobsled.
