Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trilogy, particularly the first two films released in 1972 and 1974, are widely considered among the greatest films ever made, and both won the Academy Award for Best Picture, a rare feat for a director to achieve with sequential installments of the same story. Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now, shot under famously chaotic conditions in the Philippines that included a typhoon destroying sets, a leading actor's near-fatal heart attack, and a production that ran vastly over schedule and budget, is now regarded as one of the most ambitious and successful war films ever made despite its troubled production. He founded American Zoetrope, an independent production company, specifically to give filmmakers more creative control outside the traditional studio system, a mission that reflected Coppola's broader career-long tension between working within Hollywood's commercial structure and pursuing more personally ambitious, financially risky projects. Coppola's willingness to personally finance his own films, including mortgaging his California vineyard to fund 2011's Twixt and later self-funding 2024's Megalopolis for more than $100 million of his own money, reflects a level of financial risk-taking for creative control that few directors of his commercial stature have ever been willing to take on repeatedly.
VS
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese's films, drawing heavily on his own upbringing in New York's Little Italy, established him as one of the defining chroniclers of American crime and immigrant life on screen, with Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and Casino forming a loose trilogy exploring organized crime across different eras and settings. His long-running collaboration with actor Robert De Niro, spanning nine films including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, is one of the most celebrated director-actor partnerships in film history, and his later collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio have produced a comparable string of critically acclaimed films. Scorsese won his first competitive Academy Award for Best Director in 2007 for The Departed, a recognition that came after decades of prior nominations for films now considered classics — Raging Bull and Goodfellas among them — a delayed-recognition pattern film historians frequently cite alongside Hitchcock's own Oscar snubs. Beyond directing, Scorsese has become one of cinema's most prominent public advocates for film preservation, founding the Film Foundation in 1990 to restore and protect classic and endangered films, extending his influence on the medium well beyond his own directing career.
