Fu Mingxia
Fu Mingxia won Olympic gold in platform diving at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics at just 13 years old, becoming one of the youngest Olympic champions in any sport's history, and she added three more Olympic golds across the 1996 and 2000 Games before retiring in her early twenties. Her combination of platform and springboard gold medals across three separate Olympics established Fu as one of the most dominant divers of the 1990s, and her sustained excellence from her early teenage years through her early twenties reflected the demanding, youth-oriented training pipeline of China's diving program. Fu briefly retired from competition following her 1996 Atlanta Olympics success before returning to add a springboard gold at the 2000 Sydney Games, demonstrating a level of comeback success that few divers who've stepped away from the sport have managed to replicate at the same championship level. Her combined four Olympic gold medals across three separate Games established Fu as one of the most decorated divers in Olympic history, and her early teenage breakthrough remains one of the most historically significant age-related achievements in the sport's Olympic history.
VS
Tom Daley
Tom Daley won Olympic gold in synchronized platform diving at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, capping a competitive career that began with his first Olympic appearance as a 14-year-old at the 2008 Beijing Games, giving him one of the longest sustained Olympic careers of any modern diver. Daley came out as gay in a 2013 YouTube video, becoming one of the most prominent openly gay male athletes in a major Olympic sport at the time, and his continued public visibility as an LGBTQ athlete and later as a married father has made him a significant figure in broader conversations about LGBTQ representation in sports. His public knitting hobby, which he took up during competition downtime and later showcased extensively on social media and at Olympic events themselves, became an unexpectedly popular and widely covered human-interest story that introduced Daley to audiences well beyond typical diving or Olympic sports coverage. Daley's combination of sustained competitive excellence spanning four Olympics, his eventual gold medal breakthrough after years of near-misses, and his prominent LGBTQ visibility has made him one of the most publicly significant figures in modern Olympic diving.
