Full Metal Jacket
Full Metal Jacket, directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in 1987, splits its narrative into two distinct halves — a grueling Marine Corps boot camp sequence followed by a separate combat narrative set during the 1968 Tet Offensive — an unusual structural choice that some critics found disjointed but that Kubrick used deliberately to contrast military dehumanization with its violent battlefield consequences. R. Lee Ermey, a former real Marine Corps drill instructor originally hired only as a technical consultant, was cast in the film's pivotal role as the brutal boot camp instructor after Kubrick was reportedly impressed by improvised insults Ermey delivered during a casting demonstration, and the performance became one of the most quoted and imitated in war film history. The film's Vietnam combat sequences were filmed almost entirely in England, with London's Beckton Gas Works, a decommissioned industrial site, transformed through extensive set dressing and imported Iraqi palm trees to stand in convincingly for the bombed-out Vietnamese city of Hue. Kubrick's characteristically exacting production process and the film's stark division between institutional dehumanization and its violent real-world consequences have made Full Metal Jacket one of the most critically studied and frequently quoted Vietnam War films, particularly for its unforgettable boot camp sequence.

Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released in 1979, transplanted the plot of Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness into the Vietnam War, following a soldier sent on a covert mission to assassinate a renegade Special Forces colonel who's established himself as a godlike figure deep in the Cambodian jungle. The film's notoriously chaotic production, filmed in the Philippines under a typhoon that destroyed sets, a leading actor's near-fatal heart attack, and a schedule and budget that both ballooned dramatically beyond original projections, was later documented in the widely acclaimed 1991 documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. Its "Ride of the Valkyries" helicopter attack sequence, in which American forces launch an assault on a Vietnamese village while blasting Wagner's opera from mounted helicopter speakers, became one of the most widely referenced and imitated sequences in war film history for its unsettling combination of horror and stylized spectacle. Marlon Brando's performance as the enigmatic Colonel Kurtz, delivered largely improvised and in near-total darkness due to Brando's significant weight gain before filming, became one of the most discussed and debated major performances in a film already famous for its extraordinarily troubled production.
