Galápagos Islands
The Galápagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago roughly 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, became scientifically significant after Charles Darwin's 1835 visit aboard the HMS Beagle, where his observations of the islands' distinct finch species and giant tortoises across different islands directly informed his later theory of evolution by natural selection. The islands' extreme isolation allowed unique species to evolve with little fear of humans, and animals including marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and giant tortoises still display minimal wariness around visitors today, letting tourists observe wildlife at remarkably close range without the animals fleeing. Ecuador designated the islands a national park in 1959 and has maintained some of the strictest visitor regulations of any tourist destination in the world, including mandatory certified naturalist guides, strict trail restrictions, and limits on the number of visitors allowed at any single site at one time, specifically to protect the ecosystem's fragile balance. The Galápagos Islands's combination of their direct role in shaping Darwin's theory of evolution, their uniquely fearless wildlife, and some of the strictest conservation-driven visitor regulations anywhere in the world has made them one of the most scientifically significant island destinations on the planet.
VS
Capri, Italy
Capri has drawn wealthy and famous visitors since the Roman era, when Emperor Tiberius reportedly ruled the empire from the island for roughly the last decade of his life, building multiple villas across its cliffs, including the ruins of Villa Jovis, which still stand near the island's highest point today. The island's Blue Grotto, a sea cave illuminated by an eerie, vivid blue light created by sunlight refracting through an underwater cavity and passing through the seawater, has drawn visitors since the 19th century, when the cave was popularized among Northern European travelers on the Grand Tour. Capri became a favored retreat for international celebrities and jet-setters through the mid-20th century, a reputation the island has actively maintained through its upscale boutiques, luxury hotels, and the Faraglioni, a set of three dramatic limestone sea stacks rising directly out of the water that's become one of the island's most photographed natural landmarks. Capri's combination of its Roman imperial history, the naturally illuminated Blue Grotto, and its enduring 20th-century celebrity-retreat reputation has made it one of the most storied and consistently glamorous island destinations in the entire Mediterranean.
