Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones, adapted from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, became HBO's most-watched series ever, with its 2019 series finale drawing more than 19 million same-night viewers across all platforms, a scale of live television event viewership increasingly rare in the streaming era. The show's willingness to kill off seemingly central characters without warning, most notably at the end of its first season, broke from television's traditional protection of its lead protagonists and became one of the series' defining structural hallmarks, keeping audiences genuinely uncertain which characters were safe from one episode to the next. Its massive production scale — filming across multiple countries including Northern Ireland, Croatia, Iceland, and Morocco, with some of the largest single-episode budgets in television history by its final seasons — pushed the technical and financial boundaries of what a television series' visual production could achieve. The show's final season drew substantial critical backlash over its rushed pacing after outpacing Martin's still-unfinished source novels, a controversy that's become a frequently cited cautionary example in television discussions about adapting incomplete source material against a fixed production timeline.
VS
The Wire
The Wire, created by former Baltimore Sun police reporter David Simon, used each of its five seasons to examine a different institution failing the city of Baltimore — the drug trade, the docks, city politics, the school system, and the media — building one of television's most ambitious sustained examinations of American urban institutional decay. The show's famously large, mostly non-professional cast, including numerous actors with genuine connections to Baltimore's neighborhoods and even some formerly involved in the drug trade the show depicted, gave The Wire an unusual documentary-like authenticity that distinguished it from more conventionally cast crime dramas. Despite never winning a major Emmy Award during its original run and drawing relatively modest live viewership, The Wire's critical reputation has grown substantially in the years since it ended, and it's now frequently cited by critics, academics, and fellow television writers as among the greatest television series ever produced. The show's slow-burn, novelistic pacing — plotlines often take multiple episodes or even full seasons to fully pay off — asked more patience of its audience than most television dramas, a structural ambition that's since become a defining reference point for "prestige television" critics use when describing shows that reward sustained, careful viewing.
