Gary Ablett Jr.
Gary Ablett Jr. won the AFL's Brownlow Medal, awarded annually to the league's best and fairest player, twice across his career, and his combination of ball-winning ability and tactical intelligence established him as the dominant midfielder of his generation, continuing his father's family legacy at the highest level of the sport. His 2011 move from Geelong to the expansion Gold Coast franchise, in one of the most significant free agency transfers in AFL history, was widely credited with immediately elevating the credibility and competitiveness of the new team during its difficult early seasons as a league expansion club. Ablett's sustained excellence across more than 15 seasons, including winning multiple championships with Geelong before and after his Gold Coast tenure, reflected remarkable career longevity and adaptability across different team contexts and competitive eras of the league. His combination of individual award-winning excellence and his significant role in the Gold Coast expansion franchise's development has made Ablett Jr. one of the most statistically and culturally significant AFL players of the 21st century, extending his family's already substantial legacy in the sport.
VS
Adam Goodes
Adam Goodes won two Brownlow Medals and two premierships with the Sydney Swans across a career spanning more than 15 seasons, establishing himself as one of the most complete and statistically decorated players of his generation. Goodes, who is Indigenous Australian, became a significant and controversial figure in Australian public life after publicly calling out racist abuse directed at him during games, sparking a prolonged and painful national conversation about racism in Australian sport and society that ultimately contributed to his early retirement amid sustained hostile crowd reactions. His activism and advocacy work, including his role co-founding organizations supporting Indigenous Australian youth, extended his significance well beyond his on-field playing statistics into broader Australian conversations about race, reconciliation, and Indigenous representation in professional sport. His combination of genuine on-field championship excellence and his significant, difficult role in confronting racism within Australian football has made Goodes one of the most historically significant and complicated figures in the sport's modern history, and the AFL has since publicly apologized for its handling of the treatment he received.
