Gemma Mengual
Gemma Mengual became Spain's most decorated artistic swimmer, winning a World Championship title in the solo event and multiple Olympic medals across a career that established her as one of the sport's most significant non-Russian competitors of the 2000s and early 2010s. Her technical and artistic excellence in both solo and team formats gave Spain's artistic swimming program sustained international relevance during a stretch when the sport's medal podiums were otherwise dominated overwhelmingly by Russia. Mengual's continued competitive presence into her late 30s, returning to elite international competition well past when most artistic swimmers retire, reflected a level of career longevity uncommon in a sport demanding such sustained physical precision and breath control. Her combination of her World Championship solo title and her sustained multi-Olympics career has made Mengual one of the most significant non-Russian figures in artistic swimming's modern history.
VS
Svetlana Romashina
Svetlana Romashina won seven Olympic gold medals in artistic (formerly synchronized) swimming across four Games from 2008 to 2020, making her the most decorated Olympic artistic swimmer in the sport's history and one of the most decorated female Olympians across any sport. Her sustained dominance across more than a decade, competing in both duet and team events throughout that span, reflected an exceptional combination of technical precision, breath control, and artistic performance quality that defined Russia's continued dominance of the discipline. Romashina's role as team captain during Russia's continued sweep of major artistic swimming titles throughout the 2010s made her the sport's central figure during one of the most one-sided extended dominance stretches by a single national program in any Olympic discipline. Her combination of seven Olympic gold medals and her sustained multi-Games leadership of Russia's dominant program has made Romashina almost universally regarded as the greatest artistic swimmer in Olympic history.
