Genesis
Genesis, formed by students at Charterhouse School in England in 1967, built their early reputation around frontman Peter Gabriel's elaborate theatrical stage costumes and concept-driven, narratively complex compositions, particularly their ambitious 1974 double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure to pursue a successful solo career, drummer Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist, and the band's subsequent gradual pivot toward a more accessible, radio-friendly pop-rock sound throughout the late 1970s and 1980s made Genesis one of the few progressive rock bands to achieve massive mainstream commercial success in a considerably more pop-oriented later form. The band's ability to successfully transition from elaborate art-rock theatricality to mainstream pop dominance, without either version of the band being considered a lesser artistic achievement by critics, reflects an unusually successful mid-career stylistic reinvention. Genesis's combination of genuine progressive rock artistic ambition during their earlier Gabriel-fronted era and their massive later commercial success under Collins has made them one of the most commercially and stylistically significant bands to emerge from the progressive rock movement.
VS
Yes
Yes, formed in London in 1968, became one of the defining bands of progressive rock's 1970s peak, known for extended, structurally complex compositions incorporating classical music influences, unconventional time signatures, and elaborate multi-part suites that could stretch across an entire album side. Bassist Chris Squire's melodically prominent, technically virtuosic playing style elevated the bass guitar's role within the band's arrangements well beyond its typically more rhythmic supporting function in most rock music, making it a genuinely lead-melodic instrument. The band's elaborate album cover artwork, created by artist Roger Dean and featuring surreal, fantastical landscapes, became closely associated with progressive rock's broader visual aesthetic and significantly influenced how the genre presented itself visually to audiences. Yes's combination of genuine compositional ambition, technical instrumental virtuosity across the entire band, and their distinctive visual branding made them one of the most commercially successful and artistically influential progressive rock bands of the genre's 1970s golden era.
