Georg Hackl
Georg Hackl won Olympic gold in men's singles luge across three consecutive Games from 1992 to 1998, then added a silver in 2002, giving him five straight Olympic medals in the event and establishing him as the most dominant singles luger in the sport's history. Nicknamed "the Flying Sausage" by British commentators for his physique and low, aerodynamic sled position, Hackl's technical mastery of course lines and start technique set a competitive standard that German luge programs continued to build around for years after his retirement. His sustained rivalry with Italy's Armin Zöggeler across the late 1990s and early 2000s produced one of luge's most closely followed individual competitions, with the two exchanging Olympic and World Championship titles across nearly a decade. His combination of three consecutive Olympic golds and five total Olympic medals has made Hackl widely regarded as the greatest men's singles luger in Olympic history.
VS
Armin Zöggeler
Armin Zöggeler won Olympic medals in men's singles luge across six consecutive Games from 1994 to 2014, including back-to-back gold medals in 2002 and 2006, an unmatched run of sustained competitive excellence spanning two full decades. His longevity across six Olympic Games, continuing to medal into his 40th year, reflected a combination of technique refinement and physical conditioning that allowed him to remain competitive against much younger rivals well past when most lugers retire. Zöggeler's rivalry with Germany's Georg Hackl in the earlier part of his career, followed by his own extended reign as the sport's dominant figure afterward, gave him a rare perspective spanning multiple competitive eras of the same discipline. His combination of six consecutive Olympic medals and two individual golds has made Zöggeler the most decorated men's singles luger in Olympic history.
