Georges St-Pierre
Georges St-Pierre held the UFC welterweight championship across two separate reigns between 2006 and 2013, defending the title nine times combined, one of the most statistically dominant championship runs in UFC history at any weight class, before retiring in 2013 while still champion. St-Pierre returned in 2017 after a four-year retirement to challenge for the UFC middleweight title, moving up two weight classes, and won by submission — making him just the fourth fighter in UFC history to hold championships in two different divisions, a feat made more notable by the four-year layoff immediately preceding it. His fighting style combined elite wrestling with well-rounded striking and jiu-jitsu, an approach built around minimizing risk and controlling fights positionally rather than seeking finishes — a strategic, methodical style that drew some criticism for caution but also produced one of the lowest loss totals of any long-reigning champion in the sport. St-Pierre finished his UFC career with a 13-fight unbeaten streak across welterweight and middleweight combined, and he's widely cited by fighters and analysts alike as the most well-rounded and fundamentally sound mixed martial artist the sport has produced, regardless of era.
VS
Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before transitioning to mixed martial arts, and became the first women's champion in UFC history when the promotion introduced its bantamweight division specifically to accommodate her in 2012 — women's MMA hadn't existed in the UFC at all until Rousey's dominance made it impossible to ignore. Rousey defended the bantamweight title six times, finishing most of her opponents in the first round using her judo background to secure an armbar submission, a signature finishing sequence so frequently successful that opponents openly discussed strategies built entirely around avoiding it rather than avoiding losing generally. Her string of dominant, often under-a-minute victories made her one of the biggest pay-per-view draws in UFC history regardless of gender, and her mainstream media crossover — magazine covers, film roles, and coverage well outside typical MMA media — is widely credited with proving there was a commercially viable audience for women's fighting at the sport's highest level. Rousey's championship reign ended with back-to-back knockout losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes in 2015 and 2016, a swift decline that closed out her UFC career, but her earlier run remains historically significant less for its length than for having created the entire commercial and competitive framework women's MMA has operated within ever since.
