Ghirardelli
Ghirardelli was founded in 1852 in San Francisco by Italian immigrant Domenico Ghirardelli, who had previously worked in the chocolate trade in Peru before relocating to California during the Gold Rush era, making Ghirardelli one of the oldest continuously operating chocolate companies in the United States. The company's historic Ghirardelli Square factory complex in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf area became a significant local landmark and tourist destination in its own right, and the site was redeveloped into a retail and dining complex after chocolate production moved to a separate facility. Ghirardelli became particularly known for its chocolate squares product line, individually wrapped bite-sized chocolate pieces with a distinctive flavor-paired filling, and the company has remained positioned as a premium American chocolate brand distinct from more mass-market domestic competitors like Hershey's. Ghirardelli's combination of its status as one of the oldest continuously operating American chocolate companies and its landmark San Francisco factory-turned-retail complex has made it one of the most historically significant American chocolate brands.
VS
Mars (M&M's/Snickers)
Mars, Incorporated was founded in 1911 by Frank C. Mars, who launched the Milky Way bar in 1923 before his son Forrest Mars developed both the Snickers bar in 1930 and, later, M&M's in 1941, building the company into one of the largest privately held candy manufacturers in the world. M&M's introduced its now-famous hard candy shell specifically to prevent the chocolate from melting in soldiers' hands during World War II, since the product was originally developed and marketed for military rations before becoming a mainstream civilian candy after the war ended. Snickers grew into the best-selling candy bar in the world by revenue, and Mars has remained privately owned by the Mars family for more than a century, an unusually sustained family ownership structure for a company operating at genuinely massive global commercial scale. Mars's combination of M&M's wartime-driven hard-shell innovation and Snickers's status as the world's best-selling candy bar has made it one of the most commercially dominant chocolate and candy companies in the world.
