Gibson
Gibson was founded in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan by Orville Gibson, and the company introduced the Les Paul model in 1952, developed in collaboration with guitarist and inventor Les Paul, becoming one of the most significant rival electric guitar designs to Fender's Stratocaster and Telecaster. Gibson's earlier innovations in archtop acoustic guitar design and its introduction of humbucker pickup technology in 1955, which significantly reduced unwanted electrical hum compared to earlier single-coil pickup designs, gave Gibson's electric guitars a notably different, typically warmer tonal character than Fender's instruments. The Les Paul became particularly associated with rock guitarists seeking a heavier, more sustained tone, and the guitar's continued popularity across multiple generations of rock music helped establish the enduring Gibson-versus-Fender rivalry as one of the most significant ongoing brand comparisons in the history of the electric guitar. Gibson's combination of its collaboration with Les Paul on one of rock's defining guitar designs and its pioneering humbucker pickup technology has made it one of the two most historically significant electric guitar brands in music history.

C.F. Martin & Company
C.F. Martin & Company was founded in 1833 in New York City by German immigrant Christian Frederick Martin before the company relocated to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and Martin has remained continuously family-owned and operated for nearly two centuries, an unusually sustained single-family ownership structure in the instrument manufacturing industry. The company developed the X-bracing technique for acoustic guitar tops in the mid-19th century, a specific internal structural bracing pattern that significantly improved acoustic guitars' tonal projection and durability, and X-bracing became the industry-standard approach still used across the majority of steel-string acoustic guitar manufacturing today. Martin guitars became closely associated with folk, country, and singer-songwriter music specifically, favored by numerous significant acoustic performers for the brand's distinctively rich, resonant tone, and the company's dreadnought body shape, introduced in the early 20th century, became one of the most widely copied acoustic guitar body designs in the industry. C.F. Martin & Company's combination of its nearly two-century continuous family ownership and its foundational X-bracing acoustic guitar innovation has made it one of the most historically significant acoustic instrument brands in music history.
