General Motors EV1
The General Motors EV1, produced from 1996 to 1999, was the first mass-produced electric vehicle built by a major American automaker in the modern era, developed in direct response to a 1990 California Air Resources Board mandate requiring manufacturers selling cars in the state to offer a percentage of zero-emission vehicles — a regulatory push GM's own engineering team turned into a genuinely purpose-built EV rather than a converted gasoline model. Available only through a closed lease program rather than outright purchase, with GM retaining ownership and control of every unit, the EV1 nonetheless built an unusually devoted following among the roughly 1,100 drivers who leased one, many of whom reported strong loyalty to the car's quiet, quick acceleration and its aerodynamically optimized, purpose-built two-seat body — a shape achieved with one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production car at the time. GM's decision to end the program in 2003, reclaim every leased vehicle, and crush nearly the entire fleet despite public protests and organized efforts by drivers to purchase or preserve their cars became one of the most controversial and closely scrutinized corporate decisions in modern automotive history, chronicled in the widely seen 2006 documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Assembled in Lansing, Michigan, the EV1's abrupt cancellation is still frequently cited by historians and EV advocates as a case study in a major manufacturer walking away from an electrification bet nearly two decades before Tesla and the rest of the industry made the same technology a mainstream commercial priority — a genuine "what if" that looms over the entire subsequent history of the electric car.
VS
Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf launched in 2010 as the first mass-market, mainstream-priced all-electric vehicle from a major global automaker, arriving well before Tesla had built a factory capable of true high-volume production, and it went on to become the best-selling electric car in the world through most of the following decade, a title it eventually lost to Tesla's Model 3 as EV sales scaled up globally. Its early success established basic EV ownership patterns most drivers now take for granted — home charging as a daily routine rather than a novelty, regenerative braking that recovers energy under deceleration, and a driving experience most first-time EV buyers found immediately, sometimes surprisingly, more refined and quiet than an equivalent gasoline compact. The Leaf's air-cooled (rather than liquid-cooled) battery pack, a cost-saving design choice in its early generations, became a genuine point of criticism as owners in hot climates reported faster battery degradation than liquid-cooled rivals experienced — a real engineering trade-off that later Nissan EVs and most competing manufacturers' subsequent designs moved away from. Built at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant for the US market (alongside production in Japan and the UK for other regions), the Leaf's role as the vehicle that proved genuine mass-market demand existed for an affordable, everyday electric car — years before Tesla, GM, or most legacy automakers had a comparable volume offering on sale — makes it one of the most historically significant vehicles in the entire transition toward electric transportation.
