West Point Beach, Discovery Park
West Point Beach sits within Discovery Park, Seattle's largest park at more than 500 acres, requiring a genuine hike down from the park's bluffs to reach the shoreline, a level of effort that keeps this beach considerably less crowded than Seattle's more easily accessed waterfront parks. Its remote, undeveloped feel, backed by the park's forested bluffs rather than city streets or houses, gives West Point a genuinely wilder character than any other beach on this list, closer to a natural coastal hike than a typical urban beach outing. The historic West Point Lighthouse, built in 1881 and the oldest lighthouse still standing in the Seattle area, anchors the beach and adds a specific historic landmark to what is otherwise one of the city's most secluded and naturally preserved shoreline stretches. For a Seattle beaches list, West Point Beach is the essential "earn it with a hike" entry — a remote, bluff-backed Discovery Park shoreline anchored by the city's oldest lighthouse, offering the wildest and least developed beach experience in Seattle.
VS
Madison Park Beach
Madison Park Beach, on the shore of Lake Washington in one of Seattle's more affluent neighborhoods, offers freshwater swimming rather than the cold saltwater of the city's Puget Sound beaches, making it one of the most popular actual swimming beaches for Seattle residents during the summer. Its position at the eastern end of Madison Street, one of the few Seattle streets that runs directly from downtown to the lake without interruption, has made the surrounding Madison Park neighborhood one of the city's most desirable, with the beach itself serving as a genuine neighborhood gathering spot. The beach's designated swimming area, roped off and seasonally staffed with lifeguards, reflects Lake Washington's significantly warmer summer water temperatures relative to Puget Sound, a meaningful practical distinction for anyone actually looking to swim rather than just walk along the shore. For a Seattle beaches list, Madison Park Beach is the essential "actually warm enough to swim" entry — a lifeguard-staffed Lake Washington beach offering considerably warmer water than the city's saltwater Puget Sound beaches.
