Goodfellas
Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 1990, adapted the true story of mobster-turned-FBI-informant Henry Hill, and its famous three-and-a-half-minute unbroken Steadicam tracking shot following Hill and his date through a restaurant's kitchen entrance became one of the most celebrated single camera shots in film history. The film's narration, delivered directly by Ray Liotta's Hill character throughout, gave audiences an unusually intimate, matter-of-fact insider perspective on organized crime's mundane daily operations alongside its sudden bursts of extreme violence, a tonal combination that distinguished it from more operatically stylized mob films. Joe Pesci's performance as the volatile, unpredictable Tommy DeVito, including his famous improvised "funny how?" scene, won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and became one of the most widely quoted and referenced individual performances in the crime genre. Goodfellas' rapid editing style, needle-drop soundtrack of period-appropriate pop and rock songs, and its focus on the everyday texture of mob life rather than just its dramatic set pieces directly influenced the visual and narrative style of numerous subsequent crime films and television series, including The Sopranos.

L.A. Confidential
L.A. Confidential, released in 1997 and based on James Ellroy's novel, revived the film noir genre's visual and thematic conventions within a period setting depicting 1950s Los Angeles police corruption, and the film's tightly plotted, multi-character narrative structure earned widespread critical acclaim for its faithful yet accessible adaptation of Ellroy's notoriously dense source novel. The film features one of Kim Basinger's most acclaimed performances, winning her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as a Veronica Lake-lookalike caught up in the story's web of police corruption, high-society scandal, and organized crime. Its depiction of institutional police corruption within the LAPD, including racially motivated violence and cover-ups, drew directly on real historical incidents from 1950s Los Angeles policing, giving the film's period crime narrative genuine grounding in documented historical police misconduct. L.A. Confidential's combination of classic noir visual style, a genuinely complex multi-character mystery plot, and its unflinching depiction of institutional corruption made it one of the most critically acclaimed crime films of the 1990s, and it's frequently cited as one of the finest examples of neo-noir filmmaking.
