GoPro
GoPro was founded in 2002 by Nick Woodman, who developed the original waterproof action camera specifically to help himself and fellow surfers capture footage of their own surfing without needing a separate camera operator, reportedly funding the company's early development partly by selling shell bead belts and macrame products out of his car. The company's compact, rugged, wearable camera design created an entirely new consumer camera category focused specifically on capturing first-person action sports and adventure footage, a use case traditional camera manufacturers hadn't significantly addressed before GoPro's emergence. GoPro's cameras became closely associated with extreme sports culture and user-generated content on platforms like YouTube, and the company built significant brand visibility through sponsorship of action sports athletes and events, positioning GoPro footage as central to how extreme sports content was captured and shared online. GoPro's combination of its founder's personal surfing-camera origin story and its creation of an entirely new action camera product category has made it one of the most distinctively positioned camera brands in the modern consumer electronics industry.

Canon
Canon was founded in 1937 in Japan, initially as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, and the company released its first camera the following year, building toward becoming one of the dominant manufacturers of both consumer and professional cameras over the following decades. The company's EOS system, launched in 1987, introduced a fully electronic lens mount that let the camera body and lens communicate digitally rather than through purely mechanical linkages, a significant technical shift that Canon has maintained and built upon across its subsequent decades of camera development. Canon became particularly dominant in the professional photojournalism and sports photography market with its EOS-1 series digital cameras, and the company has consistently ranked as one of the top two camera manufacturers globally by market share alongside Nikon and, more recently, Sony. Canon's combination of its pioneering fully electronic EOS lens mount system and its sustained dominance in professional photography has made it one of the most commercially significant camera brands in the history of the industry.
