Gordie Howe
Gordie Howe played 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, from 1946 to 1971, then came out of retirement to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty, first in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers, and finally back in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers for the 1979-80 season — at age 51, closing out a competitive professional career that had by then spanned five separate decades. "Mr. Hockey" won four Stanley Cups with Detroit (1950, 1952, 1954, 1955) during an era when the Red Wings were the league's dominant franchise, and added six Hart Trophies as MVP and six Art Ross Trophies as leading scorer — totals that stood as career benchmarks for other players for years after he retired. Howe's longevity is arguably the single most remarkable part of his career: he was still a productive top-line player well into his 40s, and his final competitive NHL season at 51 remains an outlier that no other player at his level of skill has come close to matching, before or since. Howe's combination of scoring touch and physical toughness — he was as willing to fight as he was to score — gave rise to the term "Gordie Howe hat trick," a goal, an assist, and a fight in the same game, a phrase still used in hockey broadcasts today, decades after his playing career ended, as a marker of his particular blend of skill and grit.
VS
Mario Lemieux
Mario Lemieux was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984 and announced himself immediately — he scored on his very first NHL shift, on his very first shot, against the New York Rangers, a start that set the tone for a career that would come to rival Wayne Gretzky's for pure offensive skill, even if injuries and illness kept it shorter. "Super Mario" won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh, in 1991 and 1992, taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP both times. He won six Art Ross Trophies as the league's leading scorer despite missing significant stretches of his career to chronic back problems and, in 1993, a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis — he underwent radiation treatment and still won the scoring title that same season, an achievement that remains one of the most remarkable in professional sports history. His career points-per-game average of 1.88 is the highest of any player in NHL history, a rate that reflects just how dominant he was in the seasons injuries and illness didn't take away from him, rather than a career built on volume across a long, uninterrupted run of healthy years. Lemieux's connection to the Penguins didn't end with retirement — he purchased the financially struggling franchise out of bankruptcy in 1999, becoming a player-owner, and as owner presided over the 2005 draft lottery win that brought Sidney Crosby to Pittsburgh, extending his imprint on the franchise well past his playing days.
